A few days ago, I dove headfirst into the stylish, neon-drenched world of Silent Möbius: The Motion Picture and was pretty impressed. It was a fascinating slice of early '90s anime, a visually arresting experience that wasted no time in introducing the extra-dimensional threat and establishing the conflicted destiny of our protagonist, Katsumi Liqueur. The ending left me hanging—would she join the AMP (Abnormal Mystery Police) or walk away? Naturally, when I heard there was a sequel movie, I knew I had to track it down.
Silent Möbius 2: The Motion Picture picks up almost immediately where the first left off. Katsumi is swiftly conscripted into the force after a classic sci-fi bureaucratic mishap: her ID is messed with, and she's deemed far too powerful to let go. In a city where supernatural incidences are spiking, she’s essentially railroaded into the AMP against her will.
Trying desperately to escape her fate, she pushes her luck out in the city’s constant, toxic acid rain. She's rescued by a young woman named Yuki and, while recovering in the good Samaritan's home, befriends the insightful psychic. This bond is the turning point: Katsumi finally accepts her destiny and decides to move forward with the AMP.
I enjoyed my time with the film as I found it still holds that great early '90s charm, but there was a definite drop in animation quality; it is not quite as detailed or visually finessed as the original but it is still pretty good.
The story itself definitely requires you to have seen the first movie - it makes very little sense as a standalone feature. But if you’re coming for more of the deep, dark lore surrounding the Lucifer Hawks, it will remain a mystery that isn't answered here: Who exactly are these creatures? What are their true motives? Is it possible that the humans are the real bad guys in this futuristic dystopia? Well, the Silent Mobius movies won't answer that so I may have the watch the TV series but we do get an end to the origin story of how Katsumi joins AMP. The pacing of this movie iss quite a bit slower than the first but in terms of lore building it established the friendships within the team that leads up to the present where Katsumi is a kickass member of the team.
Overall, Silent Möbius 2 is a compelling chapter in Katsumi's journey, even if it leaves the biggest, juiciest questions hanging in the acid-soaked air.
